Hello and welcome to February’s blog.


I’m not sure about everyone else but January seemed so long this year it’s great to be able to welcome February with its promise of longer days and spring not too far away.


As I am sure you are all aware, February is National Heart Month, the month during which British Heart Foundation try and increase people’s awareness of heart disease and also encourage people of all ages to wear as much red as they can on February 7th.  

There is a lot you can do to help your heart health, being mindful of what you eat, keeping fit and watching your blood pressure. A lot more information can be found on the British Heart Foundation website.


Keeping on the red and heart theme I don’t suppose there is anyone who does not know what February 14th is!

So, who was St Valentine?

From the BBC newsround website we are told:

The day gets its name from a famous saint…..The popular belief about St Valentine is that he was a priest from Rome in the third century AD.

Emperor Claudius II had banned marriage because he thought married men were bad soldiers.  Valentine thought this was unfair so he broke the rules and arranged marriages in secret.

When Claudius found out, Valentine was thrown in jail and sentenced to death.

There, he fell in love with the jailer’s daughter and when he was taken to be killed on 14th February he sent her a love letter signed “from your Valentine”.


The first Valentine’s day was in the year 496! Thought to have originated from a Roman festival called Lupercalia which was celebrated in the middle of February, officially the start of their springtime.

Whatever your thoughts as to the whys and when, it can be said that Valentine’s Day has been around a while.
